How important is controller quality in e-bike performance?

The controller quietly affects acceleration, efficiency, heat management, and battery usage. However, very few people actually pay attention compared to motors or batteries. Have you ever noticed performance differences just from swapping or upgrading the controller in your ebike?
 
I know this thread is a bit old, but I just swapped the stock controller on my bike for a sine wave one and it felt like a totally different ride
The acceleration got way smoother and the motor barely gets warm now
Did you end up trying a different controller, Justin? I’d love to hear if it changed your battery range at all
 
Upgrading the controller is often the best value upgrade I have felt on an e-bike. It changes throttle response and made my bike feel much snappier
Just remember that any big performance modifications can affect your cyclist liability if something goes wrong, which is why I use insurance from Sundays Insurance
A good policy provides peace of mind for expensive aftermarket parts
