Why Are E-Bikes Considered More Eco-Friendly?

Frankly speaking, a lot of people believe that e-bikes are better for the environment because they don't use fossil fuel. But I wonder how true that is when you think about the battery production or disposal of battery. Then there is also an issue of charging battery through fossil powered generator. Do you think they actually reduce your carbon footprint? Or is it more about convenience and cost savings for you?
