Hitway BK-U1 Electric Bike Review

Introduction

I’ve ridden plenty of affordable folding e-bikes over the years, and honestly, many of them feel rushed. They often promise portability and convenience but end up sacrificing ride quality, comfort or battery life somewhere along the way. The Hitway BK-U1 surprised me because it actually feels designed for real everyday use rather than simply chasing a low price tag.

I spent several days using the BK-U1 for short commutes, supermarket runs and casual evening rides around town. Straight away, I noticed how approachable it felt. It’s compact, easy to ride and doesn’t try to be something it isn’t. This isn’t a high-powered off-road machine or a premium touring bike. It’s a simple urban e-bike aimed at people who want practical electric transport without spending a fortune.

There are compromises, of course. The smaller wheels affect ride smoothness on rough roads, and taller riders may find the frame slightly cramped. But for city riding and short-distance commuting, the BK-U1 turned out to be far more enjoyable than I expected.

Build Quality and Design

The first thing I noticed after unboxing the Hitway BK-U1 was how compact it looked in person. The folding frame keeps the bike neat and manageable, especially compared to bulkier fat-tyre folding bikes I’ve tested recently.

The aluminium frame feels surprisingly sturdy considering the price point. I didn’t notice any worrying flex while riding, even over uneven roads or speed bumps. Once unfolded and locked into place, the bike feels secure and solid enough for daily commuting.

Visually, the BK-U1 has a clean, minimalist design. It doesn’t scream “electric bike,” which I actually liked. The integrated battery keeps the frame looking tidy, and the smaller wheels give it a practical city-bike appearance.

The folding mechanism works fairly well too. I could fold it down in under a minute once I got familiar with the process. It’s still not exactly lightweight, but compared to many folding e-bikes, it’s manageable enough for storing indoors or lifting into a car boot.

One small criticism is the cable routing around the handlebars. It’s functional, but it can look slightly messy depending on how the bike is folded.

Motor Performance

The Hitway BK-U1 uses a modest rear hub motor, and honestly, I think the power level suits the bike perfectly.

During city riding, the motor feels smooth and responsive without becoming overly aggressive. Pulling away from traffic lights is easy, and the pedal assist kicks in naturally rather than jerking you forward unexpectedly.

I tested the bike on several moderate inclines around town, and it handled them better than I expected from such a compact e-bike. You’ll still need to pedal actively on steeper hills, but the motor removes enough effort to make climbs comfortable.

Acceleration isn’t especially fast, but I never felt underpowered during normal commuting. The bike feels happiest cruising through urban streets and cycle paths rather than trying to tackle demanding terrain.

One thing I appreciated was how quiet the motor remained during riding. Some budget e-bikes produce a noticeable whining sound under load, but the BK-U1 stayed relatively discreet.

The smaller wheels help with acceleration too. The bike feels lively at lower speeds, which works nicely in crowded city environments.

If you’re expecting high-speed thrills, this probably isn’t your bike. But for practical everyday riding, the performance feels balanced and easy to manage.

Battery and Range

Battery performance on the BK-U1 turned out to be fairly solid during my testing.

Over several days of mixed riding, I averaged roughly 35-50 kilometres per charge depending on pedal assist level, rider effort and terrain. Using lower assist modes stretched the range comfortably for short daily commuting.

I mainly used the bike for trips around town, and I never really worried about running out of battery during normal use. For riders commuting moderate distances or running errands, the range feels perfectly adequate.

Charging was straightforward too. The removable battery makes indoor charging simple, especially if you don’t have easy access to an outdoor power source.

Charging from empty took around five to six hours in my experience, which feels reasonable for a compact urban e-bike.

One limitation I noticed is that the battery drains quicker when riding aggressively in higher assist levels. Strong headwinds and steeper hills also reduce range noticeably, although that’s pretty normal for smaller battery systems.

The battery indicator seemed reasonably accurate during testing as well, which helped avoid unpleasant surprises during longer rides.

Comfort and Handling

Comfort was actually one of the bigger surprises for me with the BK-U1.

For a compact folding bike with smaller wheels, it rides better than expected. The upright riding position feels natural and relaxed, making it ideal for shorter commutes and casual city riding.

The saddle is fairly comfortable too. I expected to replace it quickly, but after several longer rides, I didn’t feel any urgent need to swap it out.

Handling feels light and easy at lower speeds. Navigating through traffic, cycle lanes and tighter streets felt effortless thanks to the compact frame and responsive steering.

That said, smaller wheels naturally struggle more with rough roads and potholes. On smoother pavement, the bike feels great, but rough surfaces can feel slightly harsh compared to larger fat-tyre e-bikes.

I also noticed the bike can feel a bit twitchy at higher speeds, especially on uneven terrain. It’s not dangerous, just something you adjust to after a few rides.

Overall though, for urban commuting and short-distance travel, the BK-U1 feels comfortable, practical and easy to control.

Smart Features / App

The Hitway BK-U1 keeps things refreshingly simple when it comes to technology.

The LCD display provides all the basics clearly — speed, battery level, mileage and pedal assist settings. It’s easy to read while riding, even in brighter daylight conditions.

There’s no smartphone app or advanced connectivity system here, but honestly, I didn’t miss it. This bike feels designed around simplicity and practicality rather than flashy tech features.

The control buttons are straightforward and intuitive. Within minutes, adjusting assist levels became second nature.

I also appreciated the built-in front light for evening visibility, although I’d probably still add a brighter aftermarket light for regular night riding.

Sometimes simpler really is better, especially on affordable commuter bikes.

Who Is It For?

I think the Hitway BK-U1 makes the most sense for commuters, students and casual riders wanting affordable electric transport for everyday use.

If your riding mainly involves city streets, cycle paths and shorter journeys, it’s genuinely practical and easy to live with. The folding design also makes it useful for people with limited storage space or mixed commuting routines.

Beginners will probably appreciate how approachable it feels too. The motor assistance is smooth, the controls are simple and the compact frame feels unintimidating.

I wouldn’t recommend it for aggressive off-road riding or long countryside adventures, but for urban commuting and daily errands, it does exactly what most people actually need.

Final Verdict

After spending proper time riding the Hitway BK-U1, I came away impressed by how well-rounded it feels for the price. It doesn’t try to compete with premium e-bikes costing three times more, and honestly, that works in its favour.

The compact frame, smooth motor and practical folding design make it genuinely useful for daily commuting and casual riding. I enjoyed how approachable and stress-free the bike felt throughout testing.

There are limitations, mainly the smaller wheels and slightly cramped sizing for taller riders, but those compromises feel understandable considering the affordability and portability.

For riders wanting a reliable, beginner-friendly folding e-bike for city use without spending a fortune, the BK-U1 is a surprisingly solid little machine that feels built for real-world commuting.
